Vertically operated oceanographic plankton net

The ‘IOS’ is the standard non-opening / non-closing plankton net for quantitative sampling of a complete water column in larger volumes. Its overall length is close to 6.5 metres, the stainless steel ring’s diameter exceeds 1.1 metres, and the system includes a weighted stainless steel lower end frame of 16 kilograms ensuring stable and speedy descent.

The net supports a forward-counting-only (i.e. not during descent) Mechanical Flow Meter (optional) placed into the centre of the inlet aperture measuring the water volume filtered.

For easy retrieval the sample is concentrated inside of a rigid PVC bucket featuring an integrated window covered with corresponding mesh fabric. The bucket is attached to the net bag by three quickly released over-centre fasteners.

The standard mesh size of an Indian Ocean Standard Net is 335 µm, available mesh sizes range from 100 µm to 1,000 µm.
