Affordable microplastics net developed for international citizen science campaign

The ‘Plastic Pirates’ campaign aims to raise awareness of microplastics pollution and to document and counteract its effects.
In an effort to support the campaign a minimalist microplastics net was designed by HYDRO-BIOS to be cost-efficient to produce and easy to use but still effective in collecting significant samples.
The result consists of a 1,000 µm net bag of approx. 60 cm in length with a simple cod-end, connected to a stainless steel frame of 35 x 11 cm (width by height) and comes with a bridle. Two emptied and closed PET bottles (min. 0.5 l, not included) need to be fixed to the frame by the provided cable ties to act as floats.

Well suited for all levels of education, youth scouts, community groups, neighbourhood projects!

The publicly accessible database fed with sampling results from all across Europe, as well as more detailed information about the ‘Plastic Pirates’ campaign and how to contribute can be found here.
